Draw and letter with a Speedball Broad Edge nib fitted to our Classic Fountain Pen. These popular nibs are designed for a wide range of artistic expression including calligraphy, lettering, drawing, flourishing and engrossing. There are 28 different Speedball nibs divided into four categories:

  • A series for six widths of monolike and Gothic lettering
  • B series for eight widths of the 2nd edition of the Speedball Textbook rounded lettering style
  • C series right handed for the 4th edition of the Speedball Textbook lettering style using six different tips for right handed writers
  • C series left handed for the 4th edition of the Speedball Textbook lettering style using five different tips for left handed writers

Here are some examples.

You can find more details on the Speedball web site.

We provide Speedball C-5 nibs in our Speedball pens, which are designed for drawing and emulate a somewhat flexible and somewhat pointed nib. The brass tabs on the top and bottom of the nib are designed to serve as reservoirs that hold ink or paint when you dip the nib into a container.

You no longer need the tabs now that you can use our Classic Fountain Pen that feeds ink to the Speedball nib directly. You can remove the brass tabs if you want to since you no longer need them. This gives your nib a cleaner look, but it's not necessary. Some people like to keep the tabs intact so they store extra ink on the nib.

You can order additional C-5 Speedball nibs.

Back story

Speedball produced a fountain pen for their nibs a long time ago, as shown below.

Use the lever to fill the sac with ink. Press the gold button to squeeze the sac and expel a. drop of ink from the tip of the tube extending along the side of the Speedball nib. You should twist the pen slightly so the tube outlet is directly above the gap between the nib and brass tab on top of the nib. Keep pressing the button until the nib is coated with ink. There is no direct feed to the nib, which is inserted into a spring grip. Very fancy, doesn't work very, but the pen is a collector's item.

Benefits

  • Slip nibs in and out to change the shape of your drawn line

Everyone uses pens, we all have our favorites, and our favorites change over time. What we need is the infinitely configurable pen, but that defies the world we live in. There are physical contraints, and no more so than a tool we hold in our hands. It can't be too small or too big, too thick or too thin, and the feel must be appealing - our hands are very sensitive. The tool's performance must be excellent or we will move on until we find what we're looking for. Few things are more frustrating than a pen that doesn't work as expected.

We build pens for artists because everyone is an artist when they handle a pen, when they draw, write, even scribble. You are making your mark! A good pen should enable you to draw or write the way you want to. The pen should fit in your hand and feel comfortable. Most of all it should let you use nibs you enjoy and the inks and paints you want to use.

The perfect pen should be strong and durable yet easy to clean through frequent use with little maintenance, and survive the bumps and falls of everyday use. This is what we try to achieve using a combination of new technology and proven designs. We use CAD applications that let us produce novel designs using new machines that let us recreate features from the "golden age of fountain pens". We use modern materials that serve our purpose, feel good in your hand, remain good looking over time and through use, and prevent ink and paint buildup that can plug your pen.

There is no one pen that will provide everything you want, but we keep trying!
