Pen and ink have been around for a long time. Our English word "pen" comes from "penna" in Italian, which stands for quill or bird feather quills, which were used for pens long before modern fountain pens. The word is "plume" in Spanish, but in its original form it mans the same thing - "bird feather". Drawing and lettering with quills is enjoyable - the only problem is the quills wear down and have to be sharpened puristically - ideally with your pen knife. Quills also break down under the effect of liquids since quill material is organic.
