Glass Nib Pen
Draw, write and letter using a glass dip nib. If our customers enjoy these glass nib pens, we will modify our standard pens to accept these glass nibs, which can give you the following advantages:
- Instant color changes - You can clean a glass nib simply by swishing it in a cup of water and wiping it with a paper towel, making it effortless to switch between different ink color
- Safe for shimmer and pigment inks - Because glass is non-porous and chemically inert, you can use heavy glitter, shimmer, or thick calligraphy pigments that might otherwise clog or ruin traditional fountain pens.
- Large capacity dip nib - The fine spiral grooves or ribs cut into the glass nib hold a surprising amount of ink via surface tension, allowing you to write several sentences or a small paragraph with a single dip
- Omnidirectional writing - Unlike metal dip nibs that can scratch or catch on paper if pulled at the wrong angle, rounded glass nibs allow you to write smoothly from almost any rotational angle.
- Easy maintenance - If the tip ever feels a bit scratchy over time, you can easily polish and resharpen a glass nib yourself using a piece of fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper
- Smooth writing - The fine spiral grooves or ribs cut into the glass nib hold a surprising amount of ink via surface tension, allowing you to write several sentences or a small paragraph with a single dip
- No rust or degradation - Glass does not rust, corrode, or react chemically with old or acidic inks, meaning the nib can last a lifetime if handled with care.
How to clean and care for glass nibs
Proper care ensures your glass dip pen writes smoothly and lasts indefinitely. Since glass is fragile, preventing physical impact is your primary goal.
- Cleaning between inks - swish the nib in a small cup of clean water. Wipe it gently with a soft cloth or paper towel from the base of the nib toward the tip.
- Deep cleaning - for stubborn or waterproof inks, dip the nib into a small amount of rubbing alcohol or pen flush. You can also use an old, soft toothbrush to gently clean out dried ink from the spiral grooves.
- Avoid the bottom of the cup - never let the tip of the glass pen slam against the bottom or sides of your water rinse cup, as this can easily chip the delicate point. Place a small piece of sponge or cloth at the bottom of your water cup to act as a bumper.
- Polishing a scratchy nib: If the tip chips slightly or feels scratchy, gently roll the tip in a figure-eight motion over fine-grit sandpaper (around 1200 to 2000 grit) or a hobby sanding stick. Dip it in water while doing this, and test it frequently until it writes smoothly again.
How to store glass pens
- Use a pen rest - always place the pen on a dedicated grooved pen rest or a small cloth when setting it down on your desk. Glass pens are perfectly round and will easily roll off a flat table and shatter on the floor.
- Cap or wrap the tip - when not in use, slide a small silicone or plastic protective cap over the nib. If your pen didn't come with one, you can use a small piece of flexible plastic tubing (like aquarium tubing) cut to size.
- Store horizontally - keep your glass pens in a padded pencil case, a lined drawer, or a horizontal pen tray. Avoid storing them vertically in a cup where the heavy body can put pressure on the delicate glass tip.
