Quill Nib Studio Pump Pens

Enjoy drawing and lettering with any ink or paint using our quill nibs in our Studio Pump Pen and leaving behind a variable line of rich color.

  • Use any ink or paint, including India ink, acrylic paint, even lacquer and enamel
  • Especially suitable for thicker inks and paints
  • Press the pump for a stronger flow - you get what you press, from a drop to a gush
  • Change the shape of your quill nib to suit your purpose - from pointed pen to chisel tip and everything in between
  • Easy to clean - flush and brush

Drawing and lettering with our quill nibs is a new experience. The nibs are smooth as silk and skate across the paper. You can lay down a bead of color that reminds you what color is all about. You can get a wide variety of line widths by altering the pressure and angle of your hand as well as shaping the tip of the nib.

These are studio pens. You can take them into the field, but that's not their ideal environment. They are plastic tubes with a cap on both ends. You fill them from the back, and when you're finished you empty the pen and clean it. You don't have to empty the pen each time you use it, but if you use paint that dries into a permanent substance, that will be more difficult to clean.

Choice of reservoir size

You can pick from two reservoir sizes: small and large. The small reservoir works better with thin inks and paints, while the large reservoir works better with thick inks and paints. You can usually use thin inks in the larger reservoir without any trouble. The small size reservoir is sent by default.

Pick your quill nib size

We offer three sizes of quill nibs - small, medium and large. Pick your nib size according to the size of line you want to make. There is line variation with every quill nib, however, it's easier to draw broad lines with the large quill nib size and fine lines with the small quill nib, but you can form small nibs into a chisel shape, and you can clip large nibs into a pointed tip. The medium size quill nib is sent by default.

About quill nibs

Quill nibs are flexible smooth nibs that emulate a feather quill or reed quill pen, but which have superior qualities. You can twist and bend our quill nibs while drawing and writing to get different effects. You can also shape the tip of the quill nib to give you different types of drawing lines.

Our quill nibs behave like feather quill and reed quill nibs, which were popular 100 years ago. Enthusiasts still use them today to letter in Copperplate and broadpoint calligraphy as well as draw and flourish. William Blake and John Ruskin drew regularly with quill pens, and Vincent Van Gogh created some of his best drawings using reed quill nibs.

Our quill nibs are a major improvement over traditional quill feather pens. Feather quills fray easily and degrade quickly from the effects of water in ink. You have to keep trimming them back with a "pen knife". Reed pens also degrade in water and wear down quickly.

Every Quill Nib Studio Pump Pen comes with one quill nib in the pen and two additional quill nibs, which together give you months of steady drawing and lettering.
